Bolognese Bake recipe

This dish is a brilliant thing to do for a party because you can assemble it beforehand and just pop it into the oven when you’re ready to eat.

  • 500g lean minced beef
  • 500g dried pasta
  • 1 tin of tomatoes + 1 tin of water
  • Beef stock cube
  • 1 onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 celery stick
  • 100g mushrooms
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • Handful of fresh basil
  • 25g butter
  • 25g flour
  • 250ml milk
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil

Method of Preparation:

  1. Finely chop the onion, carrot and celery stick.

  2. Fry the beef mince in a bit of olive oil until browned and then transfer it to a casserole dish.

  3. Tip the chopped vegetables into the frying pan that you cooked the beef in and cook them for ten minutes or so until softened and browned. Put the veg into the pot with the mince, and then add the tomatoes, tin of water, stock cube, bay leaf, oregano and some seasoning.

  4. Finely chop the basil and add this to the sauce. Finely chop the mushrooms and add these, and then bring the sauce to a simmer and cook it for an hour or so.

  5. Once cooked and thickened, transfer the beef Bolognese to an oven dish.

  6. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions and then mix it with the Bolognese sauce.

  7. Make up a quick white sauce by melting the butter in a pan. Once melted, add the flour. Stir quickly and cook the flour out for five minutes or so. Add in the milk a tiny bit at a time, stirring constantly until you have a smooth sauce. Season it will and then pour it over the Bolognese and pasta mixture.

  8. Put the dish into the oven at 180C and cook it for ten minutes or so when you’re ready to serve it. Sprinkle cheese over the top before putting it into the oven if you fancy it.
